This thesis reports on a study that examines the strategies of reading employed by the students enrolled in the seventh semester of English study program at Jambi University and their relationships to English as a foreign language (EFL) reading performance with academic reading grades as the measurement. The strategies of reading employed include plan and monitor, determine importance, ask questions, make inferences, make connections, synthesize, and visualize.  The research was conducted at teacher training and education faculty especially English study program from 1 to 10 October 2012. The data were taken through the questionnaires. The questionnaires were given to students of English department class B regular and I non-regular in which 48 students were assigned to fill in the questionnaires,

This research is a correlational study by using questionnaire as the instrument. It is conducted to find out whether reading strategies are much in correlation with the grades that the students get. The questionnaire is in the form of descriptive quantitative. The researcher took 48 students out of 140. The data of this research were questionnaires which are based on Likert’s Scale, ranging from 1 to 5; they are Always, Usually, Sometimes, Occasionally, Never. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaires containing 30 statements to get the information of the subjects. The researcher used SPSS to process the data collected. The researcher used Cronbach Alpha to get the work done.

The study results show that reading strategies have contributed to students’ reading achievements. The frequency of reading activity has also contributed to students’ reading achievement as in the same way. The study shows that the most frequently used reading strategy is make inferences. In addition, there is a positive correlation between reading strategies employed by seventh semester students of English department and the rcalculated = 0.409.
